If you watched the US Open golf coverage today you might have caught the Lexus ad with that cool song with the happenin’ beat.
Any time one of the Indy bands featured on XMU radio (Sirius-XM) makes its way into mainstream culture, this blog makes a note of it. The particular song in the Lexus ad is not particularly new. No it’s not a throwback song as many ads often play either. It’s a few months old. It is “Get Some” by Lykke Li (pronounced “Lickey”). More specifically, it is the Beck remix version of Lykke Li’s ”Get Some”. The original record in its own right was phenomenal. I’m no music critic so I don’t speak the jargon they speak in Rolling Stone or SPIN, but Li’s cabaret style voice is compelling, especially when juxtaposed with the rock-pop style music.
Along came Beck, who I recall one of the XMU DJ’s - I think it was Josiah – said something like, “I’ll bet Beck sits on his couch and thinks, ‘I can remix that song’ to every single song he hears on the radio, but in this case I’m glad he actually did it.”
Great stuff; I actually hadn’t heard it since that time many months ago. So I’m glad it’s back. Oh, and the name “Lykke Li” reminds me of the early 20th Century pop song “Under the Bamboo Tree” – portrayed in the films “Meet Me In St. Louis” and “The Man with Two Brains”. (“If you like-a Li like I like-a you and we like-a both the same….”)
Here it is on Youtube in its entirety (obviously, you only get a snippet in the ad).

And for good measure, here is the original (I had already featured this song along with “I Follow Rivers” in one of the early posts on this blog when it heavily focused on Indy music):
