Recently I posted an 80s song for those who’ve escaped the clutches of an abusive relationship (There was one?). Today I offer a tune from that fateful decade for a much less solemn occasion.
I know we haven’t forgotten 80s super-group Asia. They’ve resurfaced this decade (not only on the nostalgia tour – which, as I found during Youtube video searches, took them to the Reno rib cook-off a couple years ago; have attended a half-dozen Reno ribfest but wish I’d made it to that one) with cultural references in The 40 Year Old Virgin and The Matador (two of the better films of the last decade; coincidence?).
Even as the band hasn’t been forgotten, I contend that what was forgotten was their follow-up album “Alpha” in 1983 – the follow-up to their smash debut eponymous “Asia” album. The follow-up album is rarely as successful as the first, but “Alpha” offered two single releases that I thought were every bit as good as everything on the debut record.
It was back in 2005 as I held my first daughter for the first time that Asia’s “Don’t Cry” popped into my head as a fitting song to dedicate as I rocked (literally and figuratively) with her that day. The other song I thought of was “I Love You Baby” by Frankie Valli – but even that was an 80s version by the Pet Shop Boys, which they incorporated neatly into their remake of “Where The Streets Have No Name” by U2.
Man, where was I?
Oh yeah, Asia’s “Don’t Cry”. 7 years later, I sing it again to my third daughter. Just an hour ago, in fact, she smiled and cooed as I sang it, and believe me I don’t sing it anywhere near as well as John Wetton did all those years ago. (I could probably garner a million hits on Youtube with her reaction to this song if we weren’t averse to putting pics of our kids on the Internet.)
So for fun, try it out on your little ones and see how it goes. For even more fun, take a trip down memory lane by watching the video. Weren’t alive when this song was released? Even better.
This is the embodiment of the 80s “concept” music video.
Enough said…. Enjoy.
